View Sample Exam
The exam consists of three parts.
- Written exam
- Practical exam for a galvanic (sti-P3) system
- Practical exam for an Impressed Current Cathodic Protection System
This is a view of how you can expect to be tested for Part 2 of the exam, which is the practical test for a sti-P3® tank.

Test Questions
- The written exam consists of 40-45 multiple choice questions. Passing grade is 75% for the written exam.
- The practical exams are interactive tests that describe various scenarios and ask you to conduct “testing” at a site.
- Practical exam is pass/fail. Student must demonstrate that they can test both galvanic and ICCS and interpret the results.
- All answers can be found in STI posted reference materials.
- All testing MUST be done in accordance with STI recommended practices.
- Answers to exam should be per federal regulations, not individual state requirements.
- The exam is open book. Students are on their honor to complete the exam on their own, without help of any other person(s).
Time
- Students will have 60 days from the first day they sign in on line to complete the exam
- Once the exam is started, students will have 24 hours to complete it.
- A clock with time remaining to take the exam will appear on every page of the exam.
- STI certified cp testers may go into their portal on the STI website at any time to reprint their certificate, update their personal information and download reference materials.
Certification
- STI Cathodic Protection Certification is valid for three years.
- At the end of this period, the tester must again demonstrate that they are knowledgeable in current testing methods and criteria.
- STI reserves the right to withdraw anyone’s certification at any time if it is determined that their conduct is unethical, (as related to cp testing).
Failed Tests
- Individuals that fail the exam must attend an actual class, and pass that exam, in order to maintain their certifications.
- No refunds will be issued for any reason.
